Observations On The Current Situation In Minneapolis

Spread the love

What I’ve observed since the tragic death of George Floyd is more reactions than actions; I’m no longer on Facebook but I still feel the ripple effect of the current situation. What this has exposed is the pre-condition of the hearts of many, this death was only the catalyst. If I’m going to seek any  counsel about what to do , it has to be from the author of ultimate justice, who is actually a righteous judge for He is impartial and judges righteously.

Shall we be outraged at this senseless death? First of all I can’t call it a senseless death, it will be diminishing the value of the man that is  now deceased and disregarding the sovereignty of God. This man didn’t die for nothing, as a result the hearts of many have been exposed. So shall we be outraged at police brutality against black men ? Yes,  their excessive use of force is beyond rational at times. And the recordings we’ve seen are far too many and redundant for us to ignore. So on one hand , if you remain indifferent and silent to that which is evil and obvious, then you’re absolutely wrong. Some may ask: where is God in all this? To which I’ll answer: “the same place where HE was before it happened” . HE still eternally sovereign in all this and HE hates the “sin” of injustice. We learn from the book of Exodus how God once saved a people that were under affliction and oppression for 400 years. So God  hates social injustices but Scripture also tells us this about those people that were saved,

All of them ate the same spiritual food, and all of them drank the same spiritual water. For they drank from the spiritual rock that traveled with them, and that rock was Christ. Yet God was not pleased with most of them, and their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.

These things happened as a warning to us, so that we would not crave evil things as they did, or worship idols as some of them did. As the Scriptures say, “The people celebrated with feasting and drinking, and they indulged in pagan revelry.”[b] And we must not engage in sexual immorality as some of them did, causing 23,000 of them to die in one day.

Nor should we put Christ[c] to the test, as some of them did and then died from snakebites. 10 And don’t grumble as some of them did, and then were destroyed by the angel of death. 11 These things happened to them as examples for us. They were written down to warn us who live at the end of the age.

1 Corinthians 10:5-9

and this leads me to my second observation. What really scares me is the lack of outrage against Sin in general. I’ve payed a close attention to the zeal with which some have been vocally invested in this situation, and they ought to. But my question is -are you just as zealous in your pursuit of righteousness, the righteousness of God that hates sin in whatever form it is. Jesus said in Psalm 69:9
For zeal for your house has consumed me, and the reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me.
We are also told in Romans 1, 18-21
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world,[g] in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened
Is God opening our eyes to our affections, Scripture says “where your treasure is there your heart will be”. If there’s sin in your life or the life of the people that you love  and you’re not as outraged as you are right now because of the current situation in Minneapolis,  then there is a problem. We invest ourselves in the fight against social injustices because we want people to be free from the oppression they are  under. But are we as zealous when it comes to freeing the same people from the real oppression they are under-  Possible Eternal  Damnation.

Right now, there is a clear outrage against sin, the sin of police brutality ( that might find its roots in racism in many of the cases) and it must be addressed. 2000 years ago a man perished at the hands of sinners for actually being righteous.  He died for doing what was right, and the church has done a disservice and continues to do a disservice to His name by not being outraged at what outraged this Man. Jesus Christ , the one and only son of God, born of the Virgin Mary died because of our iniquities and it means nothing to people in our age. In the final analysis, as the people of God I hope that we learn from this because God is trying to open our eyes  to see where our affections are. Will you humble yourself before the hand of God and ask that he heals this country or else we will continue to suffer like this.
