I stumbled upon this sermon preached by Puritan John Bunyan in the 1662 while he was in prison for preaching the gospel. You would think that this message was directly addressing the issues of our time. It’s a shame that preachers in our days have turned the pulpit into a stand up comedy exercise where most sermons are preached not to draw the audience to an understanding of the word of the Lord but rather to tingle their ears. In the sermon Bunyan explained what it means to pray in the Spirit. Some folks in the charismatic movement have so abused the phrase ” praying in the Spirit” that some believers in our days find the grace of true prayer repugnant. I’ll strongly exhort you to listen to this sermon in its entirety as it teaches us how to pray correctly, in the will of God. Jesus said to the Samaritan woman,
You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”
My name is Tayib Salami and I started Tayibs.com for the sole purpose of exploring difficult questions about the Christian faith that most of us shy away from. In 2017, I entered a very dark time in my life and it’s only by the grace of the Living God that I’m still alive today. It led me to really go deeper in my faith and consider a myriad of questions that I never thought about asking myself or others before. Welcome and enjoy the ride with me.
