Jesus, the founder of our salvation. Welcome back to our study of the book of Hebrews. We are going to finish chapter 2 today as we zero in on Hebrews 2:10-18. Last week, we talked about the importance of not neglecting the great salvation that Jesus has accomplished. Verses 5 through 9 showed us that because of Jesus’ work on the cross, and because He is sitting at the right hand of God, someday when His last enemy is put under His feet, we will reign with Him in His kingdom. We also talked about how God demonstrated His immeasurable grace to us by decreeing that Jesus tasted death on our behalf. In today’s presentation we will see why it was necessary for Jesus to die for the sins of those God has chosen out of this world.

Jesus, The Founder Of Our Salvation , Hebrews 2:10-18

The Passage: Hebrews 2 (10-18)

10 For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering. 11 For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source.[b] That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers,[c] 12 saying,

“I will tell of your name to my brothers;
    in the midst of the congregation I will sing your praise.”

13 And again,

“I will put my trust in him.”

And again,

“Behold, I and the children God has given me.”

14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. 16 For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham. 17 Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18 For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

Notes

Verse 10

Because of the grace of God, Jesus had to taste death in order to satisfy the wrath of God, we saw that in verse 9. Verse 10 explains that it had to be this way, there was no other way for God to bring His chosen ones out of the world to glory except by the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. For Jesus to become the complete and adequate sacrifice for us, He had to take on a human nature and then suffer death on our behalf. This is why He is the way, the truth and the life and that no one comes to the Father except through Him. To become the perfect sacrifice for us, Jesus had to die. He became the pioneer and founder of the only way to God. This is why the veil was torn from top to bottom after the crucifixion; Jesus became the guarantor of a better covenant because His sacrifice was complete, adequate and pleasing to the Father.

Verses 11-13

Jesus is the only Son of God, one in essence with the Father, but we were made sons of God by adoption because of Jesus Christ. Because we belong to God by our adoption, we had to be made Holy and consequently it required Jesus to suffer death on our behalf. He is the one who sanctifies us, set us apart for God and for that sanctification to be made possible, Jesus had to taste death in His humanity. We are His brothers and sisters by adoption and He isn’t ashamed to call us so. And the writer shows his readers another principle of interpretation as he quotes psalm 22:22 and Isaiah 8:17-18 and attributes them to Jesus. Because God wanted to save a remnant out of mankind, Jesus had to take on a human nature.

Verses 14-15

People wonder why the word became flesh. Verse 14-15 give us the answer to the question. Because those whom God chose out of this world are humans ( flesh and blood), only a human could intercede for them, but unfortunately there is none righteous. So Jesus because of the immeasurable grace of God,  as written in Philippians 2:5-11 made himself nothing, being found in human nature became obedient , even obedient to death on the cross that He might render ineffective he who is the author of sin, that is the devil. Our fear of death whether physical or spiritual has caused us to live as slaves, slaves to sin and we saw that in verse 5-9. Instead of the world being subjected to us, we are subjected to creation and live in fear as slaves. But Jesus destroyed the works of the devil and restored our broken fellowship. And we saw in verses 5-9, it may not look like it now but because God glorified Jesus in His humanity, we know that we shall one day be delivered completely.
