Why Do I Hate God And That Which Is Ultimately Good By Nature?

Spread the love

Last year , I remember getting into a very interesting exchange with a family member who was ready to burn me at the stake when I told him that by nature he was evil. It would have been a different story if I had told him that he was a sinner. No one gets offended for being called a sinner, since there is a popular saying that declares that none of us is perfect. So it is socially acceptable to be called a sinner, it doesn’t rub us the wrong way. But ascribe the word evil to anyone and you might be crucified. This is because we have a shallow view of what it means to be good. You’ll notice that a portion of my title reads – why do I hate God by nature? Before I even talk about my reasons for hating God prior to my conversion, I first need to establish that God exist objectively and that He constitutes the absolute. So how can I know with certainty that God exist objectively?

I first must start with my own consciousness. How do I know with certainty that I exist? French Philosopher Rene Descartes said questioning his own existence is answering his doubt about his own existence. In other words the fact that I’m actually questioning my existence shows that I exist because thinking in this manner requires a thinker. Now how do I go from that to prove that God exist ? Well there can only be three reasons for my existence. And I’ll proceed by elimination.

  1. I am eternal: That is not possible because there was a time when I didn’t exist. And the fact that I’m in a constant state of flux proves that I’m not eternal because if I was, I wouldn’t be changing. So option 1 is out of the question.
  2. I am self created: That’s also not possible because I have to first exist before I can create myself. In other words I came out of nothing ,and that’s shear nonsense because out of nothing comes out nothing.
  3. I was created by someone that has aseity:  I was created by someone. And that’s the only one that holds. Philosophers call that someone the necessary being , a being that explains all other existences. And that being cannot not be. So for God to be God He must be eternal , self existent , and we talk about the aseity of God. So we don’t even need the Scripture to prove that God IS but I’m saying this because if anything exists now , someone must have always existed or otherwise nothing could ever exist.  PS: I’m not saying that the word of God isn’t important but I’m saying this in regard to those who will say that they don’t know that God exist because they haven’t read the Bible

I must also establish that the God of the bible is the only one that can be called GOD. I will point you to an article I wrote a couple of years ago for that matter, see link  below

Now that I’ve established that God IS and that the God of the Bible is the only true God, I still need to tell you why I and the rest of humanity hate God. There is one thing that no humans can stand about God, and that is His immutability. God is eternally morally perfect, and that is something that we humans despise. There is never going to be a time when HE is going to stop being morally perfect because His Holiness is immutable, and I hated that. Secondly, God’s omniscience is immutable; unlike humans, HE is never going to have any memory lapses, HE knows all things eternally ( our deepest, darkest secrets and sins), so we can’t escape His gaze, and I hated that too. Thirdly, His omnipotence is immutable. He has all power and that is never going to diminish, and there is nothing that humans hate more than someone that cannot be defeated, I hated that too. Now I need to answer why I hated God by nature.

By nature God is good  and is the epitome of all that is good, lovely, just, and desirable. I once had an interesting conversation with my father (who by the way claims there is no God). I know that he himself doesn’t believe his own beliefs but that’s not what I’m here to talk about. During our exchange , he quoted French philosopher Jean Jacques Rousseau who said ,

that humankind is good by nature but is corrupted by society.

So according to my dad, I came out of my mother’s womb good- natured, but eventually became corrupted because of the society that I live in. Ladies and gentlemen, I don’t believe that and I reject this statement categorically because the scripture tells us in Romans 3: 9-11,

No One Is Righteous

What then? Are we Jews[a] any better off?[b] No, not at all. For we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin, 10 as it is written:

“None is righteous, no, not one;
11     no one understands;
    no one seeks for God.

And the scripture is backed up by empirical evidence as close as the evidence within my own house. I will give you a quick example, the same one I shared with my dad about a year ago. When I used to take my son to the park when he was a toddler , I put a huge a emphasis on teaching him how to share the different  stations with his peers. Do you know why ?Because he didn’t want to share, he was inherently selfish. I had to teach him how to be unselfish. This is  one of many inherent bad behaviors that I had to correct with my toddler  that everyone would label as, little Angel. So why do I and anybody else hate God by nature ? Because of the Fall , recorded in Genesis 3. As a result of Adam and Eve failure to obey the commandment of God, I and the rest of humanity lost the ability to choose that which is Good, that which honors God. The Bible says that by nature, we are objects of wrath, that’s because we come out of mother’s wombs rebellious, shaking our fists at God. But because we have a very shallow view of the nature of God, the lines are blurred when it comes to our definition of good and evil. We see someone like Hitler and categorically call him and evil man, then we turn to ourselves, and call ourselves good based on our own fabricated standards. It’s easy to compare yourself with another fellow human and classify yourself as better on the basis of your own evaluation system. But God says-you shall be Holy for I am Holy. Basically we must compare ourselves to God in every respect and if at one point we don’t measure up to His standards, that means we are evil- because to love God is to hate evil. Because God is light and in Him there is no darkness at all , and He is our measuring stick. We are not born free, the freedom that I’m referring to is the ability to choose God. So all humans are born with the inability to choose God, the inability to choose the good, that which pleases Him. That doesn’t mean that we don’t and can’t do good deeds, we still have the freedom to choose, but our choices are biased, totally dependent on our evil nature.

And this evil nature of ours comes to a climax in the various religious systems that exist. You’ll notice that in all the major and minor religions in our world, man is always attempting to appease some form of deity. And those who assume to have bridged the gap usually do so based on their own achievements. And that’s the definition of religion, it is man made, proud and repulsive in God’s sight. No one can bridge the gap to God because He Is Holy. The word Holy means that there is none like God( He is self existent ); but the word Holy also means that He is morally perfect, incapable of sinning, righteous inherently. So the prerequisite to being in the presence of God is righteousness. And unfortunately, there is none righteous, not even one, because we’ve all sinned. And to sin is to die, to be separated from God. And once separated, all man made  attempts to bridge the gap are in vain. So is there hope? Yes there is hope because God is good. Because God is good, He Himself chose to restore mankind back to Him by paying the price through Jesus. About Jesus, here is what we are told about Him in Isaiah 7:10-17,

10 Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz: 11 “Ask a sign of the Lord your[f] God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven.” 12 But Ahaz said, “I will not ask, and I will not put the Lord to the test.” 13 And he[g] said, “Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary men, that you weary my God also? 14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.[h] 15 He shall eat curds and honey when he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good. 16 For before the boy knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land whose two kings you dread will be deserted. 17 The Lord will bring upon you and upon your people and upon your father’s house such days as have not come since the day that Ephraim departed from Judah—the king of Assyria!”

Notice that unlike us, He wasn’t born as a result of an intimate relationship between a man and a woman. The Scripture tells us that a virgin shall conceive. Pause for a second to think about this. How can a virgin conceive and bear son? Only by the power of God, yes I do believe in miracles. And this prophecy in Isaiah was fulfilled when the Virgin Mary gave birth to Jesus. Also notice that He is the only one who refused the evil and chose the good ( see verse 15). And that proves that He is God in the flesh ( meaning the image of the invisible God). Jesus Christ atoned for our sins and God was pleased with His sacrifice. And God demonstrated His approval by raising Jesus from the dead. His resurrection proved that God’s wrath against man was satisfied by His blood. And there is no other name under heaven whereby mankind can be saved but the name of Jesus. He is the way, the truth and the life and as HE said, no one can come to God except through Him. God is the one who enables us to choose Him , we can’t choose Him apart from Him changing the dispositions of our callous hearts to receive this news about Jesus as good news. So if I don’t hate God today , it isn’t because I chose to stop hating Him , but it’s because in His love , He granted me the grace to repent of my hatred toward him. Even in my sanctified state, there are still residues of my old nature that pop up daily- I don’t love God with all my mind, heart and my might. But I’m looking forward to the day where I will be able to choose the good and only the good, that which pleases God.
