When Perversion Becomes The Norm, Lord Have Mercy On Us

The word perversion according to the dictionary is an alteration of something from its original course, meaning, or state to a distortion or corruption of what was first intended. In this post, I will define it as a distortion of the moral law of God. I’m well aware of the repercussions of standing up against the evil deeds of our DAY but the Lord hasn’t called us to shy away from exposing that which is unrighteous in His sight. The Scripture says in Matthew 5 :11-12,

Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not looking for some type of prize, reward or anything like that but to love God is to hate that which is abominable in His sight. Let me get to the point of this article. My family and I currently live in Urbana, Maryland, which is a lovely community with lots of outdoor activities, an excellent school system, and is generally a wonderful area to raise a family. The city publishes a magazine/journal that is released on a monthly basis. Every month, a resident’s family is featured on the cover, and their narrative is told in the magazine. We received the October edition a few days ago, and the cover depicted two elderly Caucasian guys with a little young girl. My eyebrows were raised as soon as I saw it, and I exclaimed, “Are you kidding?” My twelve-year-old son was standing next to me, and he had the same reaction as me. We didn’t have to think too hard to figure out what was going on. But I proceeded to open the magazine and to my disgust my suspicions were confirmed- these two men were married to one another and had adopted that little girl. Ladies and gentlemen, this is what I call perversion, a distortion of the natural order established by God. And what this magazine is attempting to do is, normalize and standardize that which is crooked. And this isn’t a surprise to me at all. If you pay attention to commercials and ads that are being shown to us , you’ll recognize a recurring pattern- most of them always feature two people of the same sex with kids in a family like setting. The agenda is to desensitize us to that which is not normal. If you see enough of these ads, eventually you become numb to it and are no longer affected by the distortion. They want to corrupt our minds and our children aren’t even spared in the process. It’s an attack against the institution of marriage that was established by God . I conveyed my displeasure with this piece to my immediate and extended family, and was met with vehement opposition from both sides. If my repugnance against the same sex marriage was rooted in my own opinion then I would be wrong. But same sex marriage is a violation of the Holy standards of marriage established by God. Before I continue , I need to establish two things- God exist and the Bible is His only revelation to mankind. Without acquiescing to these truths, I have nothing to stand on.

Arguments For The Existence of God 

I first must start with my own consciousness. How do I know with certainty that I exist? French Philosopher Rene Descartes said questioning his own existence is answering his doubt about his own existence. In other words the fact that I’m actually questioning my existence shows that I exist because thinking in this manner requires a thinker. Now how do I go from that to prove that God exist ? Well there can only be three reasons for my existence. And I’ll proceed by elimination.

1. I am eternal: That is not possible because there was a time when I didn’t exist. And the fact that I’m in a constant state of flux proves that I’m not eternal because if I was, I wouldn’t be changing. So option 1 is out of the question.
2. I am self created: That’s also not possible because I have to first exist before I can create myself. In other words I came out of nothing ,and that’s shear nonsense because out of nothing comes out nothing.
3. I was created by someone that has aseity:  I was created by someone. And that’s the only one that holds. Philosophers call that someone the necessary being , a being that explains all other existences. And that being cannot not be. So for God to be God He must be eternal , self existent , and we talk about the aseity of God. So we don’t even need the Scripture to prove that God IS but I’m saying this because if anything exists now , someone must have always existed or otherwise nothing could ever exist.  PS: I’m not saying that the word of God isn’t important but I’m saying this in regard to those who will say that they don’t know that God exist because they haven’t read the Bible

The Bible is His Only Revelation To Mankind

Now that these two are settled, let’s go to Genesis 2:18-24,

18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for[e] him.” 19 Now out of the ground the Lord God had formed[f] every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam[g] there was not found a helper fit for him. 21 So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. 22 And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made[h] into a woman and brought her to the man. 23 Then the man said,

“This at last is bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called Woman,
because she was taken out of Man.”[i]

24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

Pay attention to what the Scripture says in verse 24. It doesn’t say ” therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to another man”. Neither does it say that a woman shall leave her father and mother and cling on to her wife. The Scripture is very clear, when those words were being penned down, there were only two people involved in this process, Adam and Eve. So the word man in the verse stands for Adam, and the word wife stands for Eve. They are our representatives and man means the male sex, and wife means the female sex. So God is the one who instituted marriage, consequently the marriage relationship has to function according to His standards not ours. If you don’t think same sex marriage is abominable in God’s sight, let me give you more Scriptures for you to munch on.  Let’s go to Genesis 19:1-13,

19 The two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them and bowed himself with his face to the earth 2 and said, “My lords, please turn aside to your servant’s house and spend the night and wash your feet. Then you may rise up early and go on your way.” They said, “No; we will spend the night in the town square.” 3 But he pressed them strongly; so they turned aside to him and entered his house. And he made them a feast and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.

4 But before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both young and old, all the people to the last man, surrounded the house. 5 And they called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us, that we may know them.” 6 Lot went out to the men at the entrance, shut the door after him, 7 and said, “I beg you, my brothers, do not act so wickedly. 8 Behold, I have two daughters who have not known any man. Let me bring them out to you, and do to them as you please. Only do nothing to these men, for they have come under the shelter of my roof.” 9 But they said, “Stand back!” And they said, “This fellow came to sojourn, and he has become the judge! Now we will deal worse with you than with them.” Then they pressed hard against the man Lot, and drew near to break the door down. 10 But the men reached out their hands and brought Lot into the house with them and shut the door. 11 And they struck with blindness the men who were at the entrance of the house, both small and great, so that they wore themselves out groping for the door.

12 Then the men said to Lot, “Have you anyone else here? Sons-in-law, sons, daughters, or anyone you have in the city, bring them out of the place. 13 For we are about to destroy this place, because the outcry against its people has become great before the Lord, and the Lord has sent us to destroy it.”

What was the outcry against the city of Sodom and its people? The men in the city had completely abandoned, forsaken and exchanged the righteous standards of the institution of marriage for unholy ones- they wanted to have sex with other men. There is something very perverted in the account above that I don’t want you to miss. Lot offered to give his own virgin daughters to the mob but they were not interested in them. Not only that but these virgin daughters of his were pledged to two men, and let me show you the proof,

14 So Lot went out and said to his sons-in-law, who were to marry his daughters, “Up! Get out of this place, for the Lord is about to destroy the city.” But he seemed to his sons-in-law to be jesting.

I believe Lot’s sons-in-law were part of the mob. Furthermore, I’m amazed that Lot’s daughters were still virgins in such a sexually polluted society. Their virginity was not a byproduct of their own sexual purity, I can assure you. They were still virgins since no man, even their soon-to-be spouses, was interested in them. This was the perversion of Sodom, and our generation is headed in the same direction. And how long do you think God is going to continue to tolerate this. And I don’t think HE is tolerating it at all, HE is just giving people room to repent as the Scripture says,

9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you,[a] not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.

Listen to what Peter says in 2 Peter 2,4-6

4 For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell[a] and committed them to chains[b] of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment; 5 if he did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others, when he brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly; 6 if by turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes he condemned them to extinction, making them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly;

God is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow, HE doesn’t change and the destruction of Sodom was to give us a warning of what would happen to us if we follow in their foot steps. There is nothing worse than seeing blatant evil and being insensitive, indifferent towards it. And that is what has happened within our society. Same Sex marriage has become standardized and even the church has been poisoned with this evil. Instead of praying for those involved in these illicit relationships, we hide under the cloak of grace and celebrate them. We distort  the word of God by preaching a love for sinners that is stripped of Truth. My teenage son was once verbally assaulted by a lesbian who actually used the Scripture to defend her lifestyle, she said and I quote,

the bible says that love covers a multitude of sins so I’m covered

She was quoting 1 Peter 4:8 but she misinterpreted the verse. And that’s what most people do, they distort the of God to serve their own agenda. The love that Peter is referring to isn’t a love that just winks over sins, it is a love that prevents the other to indulge in sin and its damaging effect. To best understand what Peter is conveying in this verse, let’s look at how James 5:19-20,

¹⁹ My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back, ²⁰ let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.

So what both James and Peter are referring to is a love that seeks to preserve the other by upholding the integrity of the character of  God and its perfect law. In other words, because of my love for God, I must do everything within my power to be my brother’s keeper by preventing him from doing things that violate the laws of God. This is how love covers over a multitude of sins, not by overlooking sins but by warning others about the dangers of disobeying the Word of God. The church has become excellent at likening God to a cosmic Santa Claus or grandfather who always smiles no matter how evil we are. We’ve created an idolatrous image of God to serve our own agenda. We’ve stripped God of His Holiness and have covered Him with a love themed after Hollywood romantic movies. And this even shows in the worship songs we sing. Most of them sound like a love song about a boyfriend. This is deplorable and a great evil in the sight of God, and it is time for believers to stand strong and boldly declare the word of God. We cannot be indifferent like the rest of world to the evil things that are being shoved down out throats. Any disciple of Christ should be outraged to see two old guys on a magazine cover being celebrated for their same-sex marriage. If this doesn’t cause any righteous indignation within your hearts, then ask yourself if you really are a son/daughter of the living God. I’m not asking you to annihilate homosexuals but what I’m exhorting you to do is pray that God grant them repentance unto life. And speak up against it and don’t remain silent, for your silence is synonymous with your approval of their lifestyle. If you were to catch a close friend of yours committing adultery, while you may not publicly expose him/her, because of your respect and love for their marriage relationship, you would certainly hold them accountable. Same sex marriage is as repulsive as adultery is in God’s sight because they are both a perversion of the marriage institution. While the society at large may celebrate same sex marriage and condemn adultery, God condemns both and a true believer in Christ will  do the same. Don’t become numb to evil, since God’s patience will eventually run out, and His wrath will never be quenched once revealed. This is a chapter from the book of Romans that I’d like to leave you with.

¹⁸ For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. ¹⁹ For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. ²⁰ For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world,^[g] in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. ²¹ For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. ²² Claiming to be wise, they became fools, ²³ and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.

²⁴ Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, ²⁵ because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.

²⁶ For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; ²⁷ and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.

²⁸ And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. ²⁹ They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, ³⁰ slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, ³¹ foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. ³² Though they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.
